This is a Romanian Orthodox Church. The internal walls are decorated with medieval murals of exceptional quality, sadly darkened by smoke from candles over the centuries. These cannot be cleaned with chemicals as it would ruin the paintings. The whole building is protected as a World Heritage site.
The tower acted as a lookout so that the villagers could be warned of any possible attack.
Churches were built of timber as the use of stone was forbidden in order to deter the spread of further fortified churches.
