Budapest and the Treasures of Transylvania
This was the title allotted by the Tour Operators to our journey of discovery. In effect we were to travel west to east across Romania and Budapest provided the best place from which to start
Leaving our native Suffolk we flew from London to Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Here we spent two nights prior to setting out for Transylania, a part of Romania that will be forever linked to the fictitious Count Dracula the figment of Bram Stoker’s creative imagination. What we found had no resemblance to the Gothic novel instead we were transported back in time to an agricultural way of life that disappeared from our home land well over half a century or more ago. Here manual labour and the use of horses rather than farm machinery is still the order of the day while the local produce has a quality and flavour we can only recall from childhood.
What follows on subsequent pages are some of the highlights of our tour and an introduction to the historic sites we visited.
We hope you will enjoy sharing some of our experiences.
