The Iron Bridge

Medieval Centre of Sibiu

This is another Saxon settlement  that dates from the 12th century.

Founded on a Roman site it was a leading city in Transylvania and although it is less well known as a tourist spot it does have many interesting features.

The medieval centre is protected by towers and bastions and a feature here is the Iron Bridge that carries a pavement over the ramp that takes traffic down to the lower part of the city.

The bridge is nicknamed ‘Liar’s Bridge’ as it was here that merchants met to carry out dubious transactions while young lovers used it as a place in which to declare their undying love for each other!

At the time of our visit very considerable renovations were on hand in the old city centre, hence our tour of the sights was somewhat shortened.
