Sibiel

Sibiel is famous for its collection of glass icons. Traditionally icons are painted on wood but here we saw a large number that were painted on glass. Each icon is painted in reverse on a sheet of glass so that when viewed from the front, it has a splendid depth of colour. Photography was forbidden!

However, there are many quaint features in the village where we had lunch in a farmhouse. This is another place where piped water is something of a luxury. There are public wells in the streets and we saw a woman busily rinsing her freshly washed rugs in the river that runs alongside the main street.
