Peles Castle

Queen Elizabeth

The Hall of Honour shows something of the grand design. No wonder it has a built in vacuum cleaning system!

The building of Peles Castle commenced in 1873 just seven years after Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Simaringen came to the throne of a unified Romania as King Carol I. Wilhelm Doderer drew up the plans but from 1876 the actual work was entrusted to his assistant, Johannes Schultz.

The result is what can only be described as a fairy tale castle that encompasses almost every style of architecture and decoration to be found in Europe. One room is even furnished with items specially made in India. As the figure imposed on the view of the Castle will show, heroic influences are to be found in most aspects of the vast halls and corridors while the rooms are sumptuously ‘over the top’ in practically all respects.

Peles stands as a monument to the skill of the artists that created it. It is a veritable feast for the eyes and is in a wonderful verdant setting. From every point of view it is clear that royalty knew how to indulge itself for its own greater glory!
