The capital city has this vast monument to the dark days of the Communist regime that was headed by the now infamous deposed and executed Nicolae Ceausecu.
The Parliament Palace stands at the top of a long boulevard that was intended to excel the celebrated Champs Élysées in Paris. Longer than its French rival, the boulevard has a fine display of fountains, many of which a now in a state of disrepair. The Palace itself is second only in size to the Pentagon in Washington DC. Its vast interior is a cold regimented array of polished marble made all the larger by vast crystal mirrors. The site required the demolition of many houses and a church. Too big to be captured in a single shot, the picture above comprises three sections hence the illusion that the huge facade is curved rather than in a straight line. The guided tour of the building took up much of our one available morning.
We had a drive round the City to see something of the sights but our presence here was really only to make use of the airport for our flight home.
